Kiara® (Cepora PVR), a new variety bred by INRAE and marketed by CEP Innovation, stands out for several remarkable strengths that address the current challenges of the sector: resistance to fire blight, excellent flavour quality and good storage performance.
Although still very new within the varietal landscape, the Kiara® pear has already caught attention. Barely after the Plant Variety Rights (PVR) application was submitted, it has generated strong enthusiasm among growers, particularly in the South-East production area, where the first trial orchards have revealed its full potential.
Resulting from the cross between Pierre Corneille and Harrow Sweet, Kiara® is positioned in the Williams market segment. It is a reliable and consistent variety, easy to manage in orchards. Kiara® shows excellent behaviour against fire blight — a highly feared disease in production areas — as well as low susceptibility to scald. These two characteristics make it particularly well suited to current climatic conditions, especially increasingly warm summers.
The Kiara® pear is instantly recognisable thanks to its slightly rustic, authentic appearance and its attractive coppery skin, sometimes marbled with red patches.
But it is above all its unique flavour profile that makes Kiara® truly memorable. Kiara® offers a white, fine, melting and only lightly granular flesh, very pleasant in the mouth. On tasting, it reveals subtle aromas of white flowers and honey, with a delicate hint of citrus. It delivers a harmonious balance between sweetness and acidity, making it a highly appreciated pear. Its flesh is also well suited to industrial processing.
